The BCSTH Legal Toolkit: General Information About Legal Issues and Court Matters in British Columbia (April 2016) can be found on the BCSTH website under Resources > Publications. A hard copy has been mailed to each BCSTH member organization, and updates can be added to the binder when new information becomes available.

Feelings - Resources for Young Children

Here are books and other resources about feelings for Children Who Witness Abuse (CWWA) and Violence in Preventable (VIP) programs.

1. In My Heart: A Book of Feelings (2014) - For ages 3-6, explores a full range of emotions, describing how they feel physically, inside.

2.The Color Monster: A Pop-Up Book of Feelings (2015) - For ages 3-7. We teach toddlers to identify colors, numbers, shapes, and letters—but what about their feelings? Illustrating such common emotions as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and calm to encourage young children to open up with parents, teachers, and daycare providers.

3. Sometimes I Feel Awful (Kids Have Feelings, Too) (1993).  For ages 3-8. Helpful for teaching young children the difference between feelings and actions. What makes this book about kids' feelings stand out from other similar books is that it runs through a variety of situations where the little girl in the book could have used her words, but didn't, and what the effect was on the situation.  Recommended in CWWA Training

4. What Feelings do you Feel? (2012). For ages 3-6. Told in rhyming verse, this book helps children distinguish their own feelings from the feelings of other children and adults.


5. Inside Out [DVD, 95 min] (2015) Disney Pixar. MEMBER FEEDBACK: "I saw this movie with another adult and we both thoroughly enjoyed it and talked for ages afterwards about its potential use for helping children and young people (and grown-ups!) understand their emotions, memories and personalities. Whilst it doesn't deal with issues of violence or abuse, it does tell a story (using predominantly white, heterosexual characters) about creating safe spaces for recognising sadness and talking about why we feel sad."  


6. Just Breathe [online video, 4 min.] For elementary students


7. The Zones of Regulation : A Curriculum Designed to Foster Self-regulation and Emotional Control (2011). The Zones curriculum provides strategies to teach students to become more aware of, and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, managing their sensory needs, and improving their ability to problem solve conflicts.  MEMBER FEEDBACK: This is a very good tool for teaching emotional regulation.


8. What is a Feeling? (2014). For K-6. Ways in which children can develop emotional awareness in order to better express themselves without harming themselves or others.

1. How to Use This Guide

To support Transition House and other anti-violence workers, CWWA and VIP counsellors, the BCSTH Library has these practical resources - organizations, fact sheets, workbooks, videos, books, etc. - on the topic of mental wellness and substance use.

How can you use these resources? Use them to:
  • provide practical supports to women and children, such as help-lines fact sheets, and workbooks, including materials in a variety of languages
  • develop programs for women and children
  • support anti-violence workers' self-care
  • support anti-violence workers' ongoing professional development
  • evaluate resources to add to your organization (order fact sheets, borrow books to evaluate before purchasing for your library, etc)

For her own good : emotional resilience after abuse / OAITH. Susan Tiihonen, director. The substance abuse & recovery workbook : self-assessments, exercises & educational handouts / John J Liptak, a practical tool for helping professionals. It relies on a self-reflective method and includes self-assessment instruments, activity handouts, reflective questions for journaling, and educational handouts to use with individuals or groups. How you can help: a toolkit for families: a resource for families supporting children, youth and adults with a mental or substance use disorder / Nicol Chovil 

This toolkit was designed to be used by families who have a family member with one (or more) of the following disorders: anxiety disorders, eating disorders, mood disorders (bipolar disorder and depression), schizophrenia, or substance use disorders (alcohol or other drug addiction).
